Research on probiotics and their potential health benefits has increased in the last decade. Today, many people view probiotics as a staple in their medicine cabinets, along with a high-quality multivitamin. However, not all probiotics are created equally.

Our team of registered dietitians, certified personal trainers, and health coaches has tried 20 probiotic supplements and researched dozens of others. After assessing their efficacy, safety, value, and more, we’ve named the 13 best probiotics available today. We’re here to share our professional reviews and insights and help you select a daily probiotic supplement that aligns with your lifestyle and health goals.

Ritual Synbiotic+ made the cut as our favorite probiotic. Here’s why:

Probiotics are healthy bacteria found in yogurt, kefir, fermented foods like kimchi, pickles, and sauerkraut, fermented tea, called kombucha, fermented soy, and supplements.

Today, there are tons of good probiotic supplements on the market, and it’s not always clear what you should consider when buying them. When I first learned about probiotics, I knew I needed an easy way to consume them that I could remain consistent with. But I easily became overwhelmed with all of the available options. To save you the hassle I initially went through, here are the things I suggest you look for in a probiotic:

A monthly supply of probiotics may cost $25 to $80. Some of the higher-priced ones also include essential nutrients and/or prebiotics and postbiotics.

Probiotic supplements usually come in capsules, powders, or gummies. Decide which form you’d prefer.

Some probiotic strains are better suited for weight loss, while others are ideal for vaginal health. Aim for the ones that align with your needs and appear well-researched.

Depending on the brand, one serving may equal two to three capsules. Some probiotics must also be taken before a meal or multiple times per day. You’ll need to determine if you can realistically follow the directions.

While nutritional labels may include the number of milligrams per serving for probiotics, it’s better to look at CFUs or AFUs. Those measurements tell you the number of bacteria you’ll get in each dose. AFUs include the quantity of dead and damaged microorganisms, while CFUs focus on the viable ones.

Many probiotics are shelf-stable, but some require refrigeration. If they are shelf-stable, keep them in a cool, dry place. Heat can kill bacteria over time, making the product less effective.

Unlike medications, brands don’t have to seek approval before distributing dietary supplements. Therefore, when businesses take the extra step to ensure their product doesn’t include unsafe levels of potentially harmful substances, it shows that they care about their consumers’ safety.

Many probiotics are vegan-friendly and free of common allergens, but some aren’t. If you have dietary restrictions, check the nutrition label to see if it includes ingredients you want to avoid.

Ritual Synbiotic+ is a vegan-friendly probiotic supplement with traceable, evidence-backed ingredients in a mint-flavored, delayed-release capsule.

Ritual Synbiotic+ isn’t just a probiotic—it’s a prebiotic and postbiotic , too. Probiotics are health-benefiting body bacteria found mostly in the lower digestive tract. They are also in some foods, like yogurt, and dietary supplements. Prebiotics feed that good bacteria. Postbiotics are the materials left behind after your body digests the probiotics and prebiotics that include certain vitamins and beneficial nutrients. Together, all three can boost gut health and may even aid the management of metabolic diseases. ( 1 )

Ritual Synbiotic+ is a vegan-friendly supplement with clinically studied ingredients you can trace back to their source. One serving includes 11 billion colony-forming units (CFUs, or the number of live microorganisms that can settle in your gut after consumption) of two of the most researched probiotic strains: Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG®) and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis (BB-12®).

Studies show that LGG® may help with ulcerative colitis and lactose intolerance. ( 2 , 3 , 4 ) Research also suggests that BB-12® may improve diarrhea and bowel function and alleviate side effects associated with antibiotics. ( 5 )

In addition, there are 15 milligrams of PreforPro®, a trademarked non-fiber-based prebiotic. A 2020 study found that using PreforPro® with the Bifidobacterium animalis probiotic may boost the probiotic’s effects. ( 6 )

Synbiotic+ also contains 300 milligrams of the butyric acid-releasing postbiotic agent, Tributyrin. Butyric acid may prevent and treat intestinal inflammation and diarrhea. ( 7 )

One of our product testers, who has irritable bowel syndrome, said he noticed less bloating after taking Synbiotic+. He also felt like his digestive health had improved, and his gut felt more normal.

Another product tester said the mint-flavored, delayed-release capsule was smaller than other supplement pills he’s tried. He also remarked that it went down seamlessly and was glad he only had to take one daily.

At $1.80 per serving, Ritual Synbiotic+ is on the expensive side. However, these probiotics are third-party tested, and Ritual tests each batch for strength, purity, and more.

You must sign up for a monthly subscription when you purchase Ritual Synbiotic+, but you can cancel at any time. Ritual also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you don’t like the supplement.

On Amazon, customers have mainly positive reviews about Ritual Synbiotic+, but many commented on its higher price and minty taste.

For example, verified Amazon buyer Dovelette remarked, “It makes taking all necessary ‘biotics’ a breeze instead of buying individual options that often come in ugly containers or require space in the fridge. I do wish that the price was lower because it’s too pricey to justify.”

Another Amazon reviewer, Jay, mentioned, “These have made me feel so much better. They can be a bit pricey, and you get the occasional fishy burp, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world.”

VSL#3 Capsules are a probiotic medical food specifically formulated for the dietary management of conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis (UC), both of which often cause constipation. As a medical food, VSL#3 provides the nutrition support people with gastrointestinal conditions need and can’t get from food alone. ( 8 )

Constipation is a common G.I. problem associated with IBS and ulcerative colitis. ( 9 ) Studies show that VSL#3 probiotic medical food supports gastrointestinal health by strengthening the intestinal lining and balancing the microbiota in the gut. Doctors recommend VSL#3 for patients with serious gastrointestinal disorders like IBS, ulcerative colitis, and pouchitis—inflammation of the ileal pouch created following colon removal surgery for ulcerative colitis. ( 10 , 11 )

If you have IBS or ulcerative colitis, talk to your doctor about VSL#3 and how it may support your health and nutrition and ease symptoms, like abdominal pain and diarrhea. ( 10 , 12 ) There’s also evidence that the probiotic medical food may prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD), one of the common side effects of antibiotics. ( 10 )

One of its probiotic strains, Bifidobacterium lactis , may positively affect bowel movement frequency. ( 13 ) Researchers theorize that VSL#3 supports gastrointestinal health by providing strains of probiotics that promote the integrity of the intestinal lining, benefitting function. ( 10 ) They also theorize that VSL#3 may support overall health and provide some protection against chronic diseases linked to imbalance of the gut microbiome (dysbiosis) like obesity and Type 2 diabetes. ( 10 ) Though promising, more research is needed to see how VSL#3 may benefit healthy people over the long-term.

The clinical probiotic is a medical food given under the supervision of a physician that the FDA says is “intended to meet distinctive nutritional requirements of a disease or condition.” ( 8 ) It’s not a drug or dietary supplement, but a medical tool that provides nutrition support for a specific illness.

Further, probiotic medical food is a high-dose supplement with 112.5 billion CFUs per serving—most supplements have 1 to 10 billion CFUs per serving. ( 14 )

Given its status as a medical food, VSL#3 Capsules are priced higher than most probiotics at $2.20 per serving. But the additional cost may be worth it to those in need of specialized nutrition support. You can save 10% with a monthly subscription, or $6.95 per bottle.

It’s worth noting that VSL#3 contains live microorganisms and requires refrigeration. Dosage instructions recommend two capsules a day or as needed up to four times a day. Such a high-dose supplement should be closely monitored by a doctor, with specific instructions on how much to take. VSL#3 is recommended for people with specific gastrointestinal disorders and not for everyday use. You should only take the probiotic under the direction and supervision of your doctor. Plus, the up to eight-capsule serving per day may be a lot for those who don’t like taking pills.

More than 2,000 Amazon customers have reviewed VSL#3 probiotics. Many like the results, but some say it’s priced too high.

“This product was recommended by my physician with a warning about the high cost. Most probiotics are pricey, but do they work? This one truly does. It doesn’t ship ‘overnight,’ arrives in a box that has been kept cold. Would highly recommend this product.”

Peg S., Amazon

AB is another Amazon customer happy with the probiotic. “I am regular with this product and it has a good effect.”

Amazon customer BJ didn’t get the results they expected. “ I used it and saw no improvement whatsoever. If anything, the diarrhea seemed to get worse.”

Pendulum Akkermansia is made with Akkermansia, a probiotic strain discovered in 2004 that regulates your gut mucus and intestinal lining.

Pendulum Akkermansia is our pick for best Akkermansia probiotic. Akkermansia , or Akkermansia muciniphila , is a probiotic strain that was discovered in 2004. ( 15 ) It is a mucin-degrading bacterium in the gut, meaning it breaks down mucus and may help support the immune system. ( 16 )

Pendulum Akkermansia contains 100 million AFUs of Akkermansia muciniphila . AFUs stand for “active fluorescent units.” It’s a more precise measurement of the number of living organisms present in a probiotic supplement compared to CFUs.

One small study found Akkermansia supplementation helped lower blood sugar levels compared to those taking a placebo in people with type 2 diabetes. ( 17 ) Another small study found that Akkermansia may have therapeutic benefits against obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. ( 18 ) Additionally, Akkermansia may play a role in supporting overall gut health. ( 19 ) However, more research needs to be done to confirm these findings, as most studies were conducted on animals or in vitro.

This product also contains a small amount of chicory inulin, which is a type of prebiotic. ( 20 )

A single bottle of Pendulum Akkermansia will cost you $89 when purchased directly from the company. This comes out to $2.97 per serving, which is one of the most expensive options on our list. For cost savings, you can buy a one-, three-, or six-month supply. Purchasing a six-month supply brings the cost per serving down to $1.77.

This probiotic supplement is made in a GMP certified facility, meaning that it meets FDA standards for quality and purity.

Most of the studies done on Akkermansia show correlation, which doesn’t necessarily equate to causation. Additionally, the brand says the product is formulated to improve gut health, strengthen gut lining, and reduce gut permeability, but these claims are based on in vitro studies, meaning they have been completed in test tubes or Petri dishes and not yet tested in the human gut.

While it is not known why, the gut microbiota of patients with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis (MS) have high levels of Akkermansia muciniphila . This probiotic is also not generally recommended for those with PCOS, endometriosis, or IBD. ( 18 ) You should consult with your doctor before adding this to your routine . If you’re looking for a probiotic supplement to aid with weight loss, check out our article on the best probiotics for weight loss .

Pendulum Akkermansia has 829 ratings on Amazon with an average rating of 4.1. Customers say that while this product is expensive, they have found it to be beneficial and the pill size to be easy to take. “The pills are much smaller than I thought they would be and I had no issues with the smell. The smell was actually pleasant as I hate the smell of vitamins,” said verified Amazon reviewer JA.

“ Incorporating this probiotic into my regimen has been a game changer. My overall health has improved. It is definitely pricey but this is one that I splurge for because it helps me so much. So it’s worth it in my opinion.”

L. Williams, Amazon

However, the company Pendulum has 12 reviews on Trustpilot with an average rating of 2.3, with customers citing issues with customer service and not being able to cancel their subscriptions.

“Product did not work for me. The real nightmare was trying to cancel! They make it impossible! No customer service!! I had to go through my bank to cancel!” said Rheonna W. on Trustpilot.

With Onnit Total Gut Health, you’re getting five supplements in one. Each packet contains seven capsules of nutrients that help promote a healthy gut microbiome and digestive system.

Onnit Total Gut Health isn’t your typical probiotic–it’s a 5-in-1 formula that contains probiotics, betaine hydrochloride (HCl), Saccharomyces boulardii , prebiotics, and digestive enzymes spread out over seven capsules. Each serving comes in an individual packet, so you won’t have to worry about keeping track of capsules—you can just take a packet a day.

Onnit’s probiotic blend contains 10 billion CFUs from five well-studied probiotic strains . Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 is known for supporting digestive and immune system health. ( 21 ) L. plantarum helps enhance overall digestive wellness. ( 22 ) L. rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium infantis may aid in reducing diarrhea and symptoms of IBS. ( 2 ) B. lactis supports digestion and may help ease symptoms of lactose intolerance. ( 6 ) HCl helps your body create more stomach acid, which also helps break down food. ( 23 )

Onnit’s prebiotic capsule contains Jerusalem artichoke and dandelion, both of which can support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and promote a healthy microbiome. ( 24 ) The HCl capsule works to help your body create more stomach acid, which also helps break down food. ( 23 ) The DigesTech blend is designed to further support digestion. And the Saccharomyces boulardii capsule adds another 5 billion CFUs to your serving size, bringing you to 15 CFUs total.

A 30-day supply of Onnit costs $75.90, putting each serving at $2.53. While this is one of the more expensive options on the market, it may be worth it when you consider how many supplements it can replace.

At this price point, we’d prefer to see third-party testing and more label transparency. For example, the CFU of each probiotic strain is not provided, nor is the amount of each ingredient in the DigesTech blend®. This makes it difficult to determine the efficacy and safety of these ingredients.

And, the serving size of seven capsules per day is a lot—many other supplements on our list have a serving size of one to two capsules, which may be easier to take.

On Amazon, Onnit Total Gut Health has received 325 global ratings, most of which are positive. Customers regularly comment on the quality and performance of this supplement. Some of the less positive reviews are due to the price.

For example, verified Amazon buyer Maha Sayad wrote, “Love these pills. They’ve helped my stomach so much with bloating. I wish they were cheaper though.”

Another Amazon reviewer, CJ, remarked, “[This] product works great. I could not be happier.”

Nutricost Lactobacillus Acidophilus Capsules provide 10 billion CFUs of a single strain of friendly gut bacteria.

Nutricost Lactobacillus Acidophilus Capsules, with 10 billion CFUs, offers a simple yet effective way to support digestive health. At under $0.17 per serving, this budget-friendly supplement is an excellent way to introduce more L. acidophilus into your digestive system. This is simply a friendly bacteria that lives in your gut and helps keep things running smoothly. Proper amounts of L. acidophilus can help improve digestion and prevent problems like bloating and gas. ( 21)

Using a probiotic with just one strain, like Nutricost’s Lactobacillus Acidophilus Capsules, is a more targeted approach that can be beneficial for individuals looking to address specific digestive issues or simply maintain overall gut health.

L. acidophilus has been widely studied for decades, and its role in many diseases and other aspects of human health is constantly being explored. This strain may enhance immunity, help reduce cholesterol, and even have anti-cancer properties. ( 21)

At just under $0.17 per serving, Nutricost Lactobacillus Acidophilus Capsules are cost-effective and accessible. Plus, you can enroll in a subscription and save an additional 20%. On top of its great value, our team appreciates that Nutricost is made in a GMP-compliant facility, is non-GMO, and even comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Unlike most of the other products on our list, this supplement only contains one probiotic strain.

Nutricost Lactobacillus Acidophilus Capsules has garnered over 1,400 reviews on Amazon, most of which are positive. Buyers regularly comment on the value, quality, and performance.

“I have only been taking it for a week, and it seems to be working well.”

Deborah A., Amazon

Another Amazon buyer named Sydney H. wrote, “I was hesitant to buy these because of the price, but they work well! I’m impressed!”

However, some Amazon customers weren’t as impressed with the results, or lack thereof.

For example, Denise S. mentioned, “I wanted to give this a try, but there was no improvement. I found drinking Kefir worked better than popping a pill.”

Ora Trust Your Gut contains six strains of probiotics, including Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1, to support digestion, along with prebiotics to help feed good gut bacteria.

Ora Organic Trust Your Gut Daily Essential Probiotic + Prebiotic is our pick for the best prebiotic and probiotic for many reasons. The supplement contains six well-researched strains of probiotics, including Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri UALre-16. These strains are known to aid in digestion, improve inflammation, and help reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance. ( 21 , 25 ) Another benefit of this supplement is that these probiotic strains are resistant to stomach acid, which helps increase the likelihood the probiotics reach the intestines while still viable. ( 26 )

The prebiotics and probiotics in Ora Organic Trust Your Gut can help regulate bowel movements. The Organic Jerusalem Artichoke Inulin prebiotics are dietary fiber that can help regulate bowel movements. ( 27 ) And, research supports the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum may prevent or treat inflammatory bowel disease by relieving chronic inflammation. ( 28 )

Additionally, prebiotics may help promote the growth of good bacteria in the skin microbiome. ( 29 )

We like that this plant-based product is gluten-free and dairy-free and doesn’t need to be kept refrigerated. The brand guarantees potency through shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about the product becoming less beneficial on your shelf. Ora recommends taking the two-capsule serving size with food or breaking them open and mixing into a smoothie.

This supplement comes in at $1.33 per serving, falling in the mid-range on our list. We like that it has both plant-based prebiotics and probiotics, making this a good option for those with dietary restrictions who are looking to add more gut health support to their diets.

This probiotic must be taken with food, so you’ll need to plan to consistently take it with a meal. While this product is mid-range on our list, it still may not fit into everyone’s budget.

Over 2,700 verified customers on Amazon rate this product an average of 4.3 out of 5. Two benefits of the product reviewers love are that it helps support regular bowel movements and reduces feelings of bloat. Users appreciate that this plant-based supplement comes in a glass bottle.

“ I’ve been using these capsules for a while now, and they’ve made a significant difference. Long-Term Benefits: After that initial period, things improved dramatically. My stool passes regularly, and I’m no longer plagued by bloating and gas. It’s been a game-changer for my digestive health.”

Jen, Amazon

However, some reviewers note that while they like the supplement, the cost keeps them from purchasing regularly.

”This product works great, helped me digest foods and my bloating gets better. The only bad thing is the price I can’t always afford it, when I can I buy it,” notes verified buyer Karla.

O Positiv URO Vaginal Probiotic Capsules are a reasonably priced probiotic for women that come with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

O Positiv URO Vaginal Probiotic Capsules are formulated with probiotics and prebiotics that are well-studied to support vaginal health. According to research, Lactobacillus is the most abundant microorganism in the vagina. ( 30 ) Lactobacillus is said to attach to the vaginal epithelium (protective layer) to combat pathogens, which could then support immunity and improve the vaginal environment. ( 30 )

This top women’s probiotic supplement contains 5 billion CFUs of a blend of four strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus , Lactobacillus rhamnosus , Lactobacillus reuteri , and Lactobacillus fermentum .

An older study on Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri found they were the most effective strains at conserving and restoring normal vagina microbiota. ( 31 ) Though more research is needed, one review found probiotics—especially Lactobacillus strains—may help with vaginal imbalance and bacterial vaginosis (BV), which can cause abnormal odor. ( 32 )

The product is also formulated with xylooligosaccharides, which are prebiotics that can help promote gut health. ( 33)

At $1.07 per serving, this product is in the mid-range of supplements on our list. However, we like that this product doesn’t require refrigeration or need to be taken with food—just water.

O Postiv offers a 60-day money-back guarantee. The brand also points out that it may take up to eight weeks for the product to be fully effective, so you’ll have to budget this in for at least two months before you begin seeing results.

One drawback of this product is the probiotics are formulated into a blend, so while there are 5 billion CFUs per serving, it’s not clear how much of each strain is in the product. Additionally, this supplement has one of the lower doses of CFUs on our list; so if you have specific gut health needs, this product may not work for you.

To see more options, visit our roundup of the best probiotics for women .

O Positiv URO Vaginal Probiotic Capsules have over 3,900 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of 4.5 stars.

Many reviewers say the product has made a difference in vaginal odor and overall comfort. “I am almost done with my first bottle and I must say it does a great job! No odor anymore, even on the days I have a sweaty workout,” said purchaser SoSo4599.

“ Overall, I’m beyond impressed with these probiotics. My overall vaginal health has improved more than I ever imagined, and I’ll definitely be keeping them as a permanent part of my wellness routine.”

Allyson, Amazon

However, some reviewers say the product doesn’t work well for them or causes side effects, so they’d rather stick with a product that costs less.

Reviewer Amy K. says “I tried these for a couple of months & felt no different & had no decrease in smell (or taste) as advertised. I’ll spend a little less & go back to Rephresh Pro-B.”

Sports Research Daily Probiotics emerge as our top choice for vegan-friendly probiotics, thanks to a diverse mix of probiotic strains and a dedication to efficacy and high-quality ingredients.

Sports Research Daily Probiotics is packed with 12 research-backed strains of probiotics, carefully chosen to maximize digestive and immune system health. The formula is vegan-certified and non-GMO verified.

The supplement contains probiotic strains, like Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria , to target symptoms associated with IBS, such as bloating and abdominal discomfort, while also potentially supporting immune, gastrointestinal, and reproductive health in healthy adults. ( 34 , 35 )

Additionally, a fiber inulin blend acts as a prebiotic, promoting optimal gut health, enhancing nutrient absorption, and strengthening the immune system. Research indicates that inulin could aid in fat metabolism, weight loss, and blood sugar regulation. Moreover, it may lower the risk of colon cancer and alleviate symptoms of depression. ( 36 )

These probiotics don’t require refrigeration, making them perfect for busy lifestyles. The delayed-release veggie capsules ensure the probiotics reach your colon intact. Plus, the 60 billion CFUs per serving are guaranteed until the product’s expiration date.

Priced at $0.83 per serving, Sports Research Daily Probiotics provides exceptional value compared to similar quality supplements. Sports Research products are third-party tested and manufactured in a cGMP-compliant facility with stringent quality control standards.

This probiotic supplement is formulated with proprietary blends, so the CFUs of each strain aren’t provided, which can make it hard to determine its effectiveness.

On Amazon, there are over 5,000 ratings for Sports Research Daily Probiotics. Most of the reviews are positive.

A verified customer named Amanda wrote, “Honestly, I’ve only taken it for maybe four days now, and I’ve already seen improvements in my gut health and digestive system.”

“These daily probiotics have been a true lifesaver for my easily irritable gut!”

Username “AnalogCyan,” Amazon

The few negative reviews are over two years old. Some customers experienced gas, bloating, or an upset stomach, while others didn’t notice improvements in their digestive function.

“There has been no improvement to my overall gut health since starting to take this product,” wrote verified Amazon customer Ryan Rhoades. It was well worth a try, but I will not buy this again.”

Transparent Labs Probiotic is packed with potent probiotic strains designed to bolster overall digestive health and address factors linked to constipation.

Transparent Labs Probiotic is our top choice for acid reflux because it boasts a blend of 10 probiotic strains designed to support overall gastrointestinal function. The combination of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria strains may promote a healthy gut environment, potentially aiding in digestion and nutrient absorption. ( 37 )

Specific strains like Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium bifidum , and Bifidobacterium breve have demonstrated benefits in supporting digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and enhancing stool consistency. ( 38 )

Additionally, the inclusion of 100 milligrams of inulin fructooligosaccharide (FOS) powder provides nourishment for the beneficial bacteria in your gut, potentially contributing to a balanced microbiota and supporting overall gut function. ( 39 )

The formula contains 100 billion CFUs that are guaranteed to be potent until the expiration date. This is important because probiotics need to be alive to be beneficial.

With its emphasis on potency, transparency, and quality ingredients, Transparent Labs Gut Health Series Probiotic offers value beyond its $1.53 cost per serving. Moreover, it caters to various dietary preferences, being non-GMO, gluten-free, and suitable for vegans.

Transparent Labs suggest this product be taken on an empty stomach, so this product may work best for those who can remember to take their supplements first thing in the morning.

Biotics 8 includes 10 probiotic strains and other ingredients that may help improve men’s overall health.

Biotics 8 Men’s High Performance Probiotic Formula is specifically crafted to support men’s gut and immune health. With 10 strains of probiotics in just one product, it may improve mood, gut health, energy, and more.

In addition to 10 probiotic strains, Biotics 8 contains vitamin D3, prebiotics, and three digestive enzymes. The body needs vitamin D3 to help build and maintain bones, and lacking it may increase one’s risk of immune-related diseases and disorders. ( 40 )

The prebiotic inulin stimulates the growth of good bacteria and may alleviate colon cancer risk, reduce blood sugar, promote weight loss, and aid digestive issues like constipation. ( 36 ) Another prebiotic, fructooligosaccharide, could boost levels of good gut bacteria, though it may cause bloating and gas in some people. ( 41 ) The digestive enzymes lipase, protease, and amylase help the body break down food and absorb nutrients. ( 23 ) Biotics 8 provides 20 billion CFUs of probiotics, including strains like Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium longum . These strains may help with the severity of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. ( 42 , 43 )

A bottle of Biotics 8 provides 30 servings and costs $80, about $2.67 per serving. Compared to other probiotics, these are a lot more expensive than average. Plus, three capsules equals one serving, making it a deal-breaker for those with pill aversion. We also couldn’t find any information about third-party testing.

There are only two English reviews on Trustpilot, and they’re both negative. Customers were disappointed by the customer service they received.

Ian Wilson stated that he never received his order. He mentioned that when he contacted Biotics 8, they just “Repeated ‘off the shelf’ replies to my emails, which took two days to reply.”

Another reviewer, David Commeau DJ, remarked that it took 10 days for his order to arrive. He didn’t notice any changes after taking them. He said, “Still debating on whether or not it would be worth my time and money to return them, considering I may never see a refund.”

YourBiology Gut+ includes probiotics and vitamin D, as well as digestive enzymes that may enhance the body’s ability to break down and absorb nutrients.

YourBiology Gut+ is a probiotic supplement with ingredients that may support the largest organ in the body: the skin. This dairy- and soy-free formula is suitable for vegans. And, the product is prepared in a U.S.-based, GMP-certified facility and comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

YourBiology Gut+ includes three digestive enzymes, a proprietary blend of 10 probiotic strains, two prebiotics, and vitamin D3. The digestive enzymes support the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients, which may help the body adequately receive the other ingredients in this supplement.

Vitamin D3 has protective and anti-aging effects on the skin due to its antioxidativent- and anti-inflammatory-supporting properties. ( 44 ) The prebiotics could promote the growth of good bacteria not only in the gut but also in the skin microbiome. ( 29 )

Each serving of YourBiology Gut+ has 20 billion CFUs. One of its 10 probiotics is L. paracassei , a species claimed to help with skin recovery and alleviate local skin inflammation. ( 45 )

YourBiology Gut+ comes in vegetarian capsules that may move through the digestive tract more easily than gelatin capsules. The instructions state you should take one capsule daily for the first four days, two capsules until day nine, and three capsules daily after that. Our product tester said this process was different from other probiotic supplements she’s tried, but besides that, she had no complaints.

At $2.67 per serving, this is a pricier probiotic supplement. It includes evidence-supported ingredients and is suitable for most diets, but it lacks proof of third-party testing and has zero verified reviews. The serving size of three capsules also may be less convenient to take than products that require one- or two-capsule doses.

Seed DS-01 Daily Synbiotic offers a prebiotic and probiotic blend to support a healthy gut microbiome.

Sixteen of the 24 probiotic strains in Seed DS-01 Daily Synbiotic are dedicated to gut health, which can help reduce bloat. A single serving of DS-01 Daily Synbiotic contains 53.6 billion AFUs, and 37 billion AFUs come from the digestive health probiotic blend alone. AFU is another method of measuring the number of active probiotic cells that may be more accurate than measuring CFUs.

Some of the probiotic strains include Bifidobacterium longum , Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus , and Bifidobacterium lactis . Research suggests these strains may improve bowel dysfunction in gastrointestinal motility disorders and G.I. symptoms caused by antibiotics. ( 34 , 46 , 47 ) Furthermore, Limosilactobacillus fermentum may help with inflammatory diseases like intestinal inflammation. ( 48 )

Seed DS-01 Daily Synbiotic is essentially a capsule within a capsule. The outer capsule contains a solubilized prebiotic blend, and the inner capsule includes the probiotic strains. This helps prevent the ingredients from getting burned by stomach acid so they can successfully reach the small intestine.

According to Seed, this 2-in-1 pre- and probiotic also undergoes over 50 quality control checkpoints. It’s third-party tested for 500+ pesticide residues and heavy metals.

Purchasing this probiotic supplement requires signing up for a monthly subscription. The first order comes with a refillable glass jar, a glass travel vial, and a 30-day supply of capsules. Subsequent orders contain a one-month refill until you reschedule or cancel. Seed offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, which might be attractive to those on the fence.

At just $1.66 per serving, this synbiotic comes at a reasonable price and potentially offers a lot of value to those wanting to improve their gut microbiome. It’s vegan-friendly and free of soy, gluten, and various allergens, making it a solid choice for most.

In order to purchase this product, you’ll have to commit to a subscription. Seed suggests these supplements are best taken on an empty stomach, so you’ll have to time when you take them—either between meals or when you wake up—for best results.

On Amazon, verified purchaser Natalie remarked that she loved the product for herself and her daughter. She proclaimed, “I really like that I don’t have to refrigerate them, and both the capsules and the powder packets travel very well. Our family is going to keep taking these, and I’m hopeful our immunity will improve!”

Another Amazon buyer, Cathy, experienced a few side effects after trying the product for three days. She stated, “Suffered cramping, bloating, nausea. The worst side effect was severe flatulence. Stopped for a couple of days, and symptoms stopped.”

Provided in capsule form, the Bioma Probiotics formula includes research-backed ingredients that may have anti-inflammatory effects.

Inflammation is a common symptom associated with some chronic diseases. While supplements can’t cure them, products like Bioma Probiotics may help reduce inflammation by replenishing the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

One serving of Bioma Probiotics contains 100 milligrams of xylooligosaccharides (XOS), 90 milligrams of Tributyrin, and 9 billion CFUs of probiotics.

XOS is a prebiotic that may lower blood lipid levels, adjust blood glucose levels, and improve the intestinal ecosystem. ( 49 ) In a study involving patients with ulcerative colitis, XOS supplementation appeared to help with colonic inflammation. ( 50 ) It also stimulated the growth of some probiotics, like Bifidobacterium .

The proprietary blend of probiotics in this formula includes strains of Bifidobacterium lactis ,

Bifidobacterium longum , and Bifidobacterium breve . Research suggests that the genus, Bifidobacterium , helps regulate immune homeostasis, and a deficit of it in the gut could lead to autoimmune issues. ( 51 ) A study on Bifidobacterium longum specifically revealed that it may prevent or treat inflammatory bowel disease by relieving chronic inflammation. ( 28 )

The postbiotic Tributyrin also has anti-inflammatory effects, as it releases butyric acid, a fatty acid that regulates inflammatory responses. ( 52 )

Bioma Probiotics come in capsule form, and you must take two before breakfast daily. The probiotics are third-party tested for efficacy and heavy metals and free of artificial additives. The capsule is formulated to be suitable for vegans, but note the product is manufactured in a facility that handles tree nuts, peanuts, soybeans, fish, and other potential allergens.

At $1.87 per serving, Bioma Probiotics are more expensive than similar options that offer a bit more, though the brand does offer free shipping. Additionally, the 14-day money-back policy pales compared to others, especially since the company says it may take 6-8 weeks to see results.

On Amazon, Bioma Probiotics received mixed reviews. Many customers liked how easy it was to consume and noted changes in their weight.

Jillian Williams noted a big difference after taking them. She went on to say, “I don’t have sugar cravings, and my nails, skin, and hair look and feel much healthier.”

However, Verified purchaser R. Lee felt like the product worked in the beginning but then stopped. They said, “It did subdue some of my cravings. I wasn’t tempted to eat candies, cakes, and other sweets my coworkers had at work. I lost 7 lbs. Was it due to the capsules? Not sure.” After three months, the weight returned, and they made an update stating, “I wanted to give it more time. I’m three months in. No weight loss. Some gain. Normal eating patterns. After I finish this up, I’m not going to continue.”

Our team has tested 20 probiotics and researched dozens more. Every probiotic we review is rated across six primary categories. Each category is assigned a different percentage weight of the total score based on its relative importance when considering whether or not you should purchase a plant-protein product. Probiotic supplements can also earn bonus credits that boost the overall rating for third-party testing credentials from NSF, Labdoor, and more.

There are many different probiotic strains, each designed to address a specific health goal. Avoiding proprietary blends is crucial for transparency, allowing consumers to know exactly what and how much of each ingredient is included, ensuring a better assessment of the product’s effectiveness and safety.

Identifies the specific strains of probiotics or beneficial bacteria present in the product. The importance lies in the fact that different strains offer distinct health benefits, such as improved gut health, enhanced immunity, or better digestion.

Here are a few we consider:

We determine if the probiotic cultures are paired with a prebiotic or other food source that nourishes the bacteria during digestion. This can enhance the survival rate of probiotics as they navigate through the digestive system, ensuring they reach the intestines effectively.

This examines whether the probiotic cultures in the product are alive and viable at the time of consumption, which are necessary for the probiotics to exert their beneficial effects in the gut. The effectiveness of the product often depends on the survival of these cultures through processing and storage.

CFUs represent the number of live microorganisms, typically bacteria, present in a probiotic supplement at the end of its shelf life. We like to see probiotics that provide at least 20 billion or more CFUs, though these are the ranges we consider:

The form is important because it can affect how easily the product is consumed, absorbed, and stored. Different forms may also have varying shelf lives and convenience factors for the user.

We evaluate:

Probiotics are touted to help a variety of symptoms and conditions; diarrhea brought on by antibiotic use and gastrointestinal conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), to offset obesity and related metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes, sepsis in preterm infants, colic in infants, allergies, skin issues like acne, and dental disease. Probiotics work by stimulating and adding to the good bacteria in the digestive tract. ( 1 )

Our gut microbiota is an ecosystem within the intestines that’s filled with good and potentially harmful microbes. When we’re healthy, these live microorganisms operate harmoniously and perform as intended. However, we may notice undesirable physiological changes when there’s a disbalance in the microbiome (dysbiosis) caused by antibiotics, illness, diet, or something else. ( 53 )

Fortunately, probiotics may help restore the system again and further maintain balance in the gut. Here are five benefits associated with using probiotic supplements.

Research shows that probiotics may provide relief from constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. ( 13 , 54 , 55 ) Introducing probiotics can also help alleviate issues like nausea and vomiting, especially during pregnancy. ( 56 )

High blood cholesterol levels can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Some strains of probiotics have been shown to potentially lower blood cholesterol levels. ( 21 )

Probiotics may improve skin diseases by reducing oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation, and maintaining a healthy immune system that obstructs pathogens. ( 57 ) Studies have shown that probiotics and prebiotics may help treat psoriasis and eczema cases. ( 58 , 59 )

A robust immune system is necessary to help your body fight off infections and illnesses. Probiotics may help stimulate the immune system to better respond to pathogens. ( 60 ) Certain strains, like Bifidobacterium bifidum , have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory features that help stave off pathogens. ( 61 )

An imbalanced gut may be associated with mental health conditions, and probiotics could be a safe and cost-effective treatment method. ( 62 ) For instance, in one study, older adults who received probiotic supplementation saw improved mental flexibility and stress. ( 63 ) Another study demonstrated that those with cognitive impairments and Alzheimer’s disease saw increased cognitive function following probiotic use. ( 64 )

Probiotics are often found in fermented foods or beverages. Fermentation is a form of preservation in which foods are produced or changed using microbes.

Some fermented foods that are rich in probiotics include yogurt, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, pickles, miso, and tempeh. Even some unfermented foods, like cereal, have probiotics added.

Probiotics are dietary supplements that aim to complement your health routine and fill-in nutritional gaps. There are no set recommendations for who should take a probiotic. ( 14 ) However, you should discuss benefits and risks of supplementation with your doctor before starting a probiotic.

Certain medical conditions may benefit from the addition of a probiotic, but should only be taken under the supervision of your doctor.

Probiotics are generally safe and readily available, so you may not think too much about what to avoid when choosing your supplement. However, probiotics may contain added ingredients like fillers, binders, or artificial ingredients you want to limit or avoid. You also want to make sure the supplement is free from allergens or ingredients you don’t tolerate.

You should also avoid choosing a probiotic that isn’t properly stored, as it may affect the quality of the supplement, like a supplement found on the shelf that requires refrigeration.

Probiotics come in varying doses, ranging from 1 to 50 billion CFUs, sometimes even more. The World Gastrointestinal Organisation (WGO) conveys there’s not enough evidence to provide a general dosage of probiotics. ( 65 )

The probiotic dose you need depends on the strain or strains of the probiotic in the supplement, your reason for supplementation, and the results of scientific research. ( 65 ) Talk to your doctor for personalized guidance on probiotic strain and dose to help you meet your goal.

When you first start taking probiotics, you may experience digestive discomfort like bloating, diarrhea, gas, and/or an upset stomach. In addition, certain probiotic strains may cause headaches.

Although rare, probiotics could trigger an allergic reaction, antibiotic resistance, or infection. Speak with your doctor to assess the risks versus benefits.

Probiotics and prebiotics are important for gut health, but they each play their own role.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that benefit health when consumed in adequate amounts. ( 65 ) Prebiotics are select ingredients that cause unique changes in the composition or activity of the gut’s microbiome. ( 65 ) In general, probiotics supply the beneficial microorganisms, while prebiotics help them thrive.

Probiotics are naturally found in fermented foods like yogurt and kefir, while prebiotics are non-digestible fibers like oligosaccharides and inulin found in foods like onions, garlic, and bananas. ( 65 )

Delayed-release probiotic capsules are often considered the best form of probiotics because they help protect essential nutrients. However, more research is needed to confirm this. Instead, it’s more important to focus on the specific probiotic strains and their benefits for your particular health condition.

There’s evidence that probiotics may aid immune function and improve digestive, heart, and overall health. Some studies even demonstrate that probiotics may enhance cognitive functioning. In addition, the suggested benefits typically outweigh the few minor side effects associated with these supplements.

There’s no specific time you should take probiotics, but you should check the product’s label to see if you should take it with food or on an empty stomach. To maintain consistency, it’s a good idea to take your probiotic at the same time each day. When starting a new probiotic, you may experience some G.I. discomfort, so it’s best to avoid taking a new-to-you probiotic while you’re away from the comfort of your own home.

It takes a few days—up to weeks—for probiotics to work, depending on your reason for taking them. If you are taking them to counteract the effects of an antibiotic, it should be a few days, but for a chronic condition, it may be longer for you to feel or see the benefits.

You should always speak with a healthcare professional before taking probiotic supplements. Those with a compromised immune system, certain gastrointestinal disorders, or severe illness should avoid probiotics unless their doctor approves.

Physician’s Choice 60 Billion Probiotic has a doctor-approved formula. However, doctors often make specific recommendations based on patients’ signs and symptoms. If you’re unsure which direction to take, ask your physician for a safe and suitable option.

Each probiotic strain has features and benefits that may make it better equipped to improve certain symptoms or conditions than others. However, more research is needed to determine how they should be applied.
